Crime and criminals - Assault - Preston ( 1933) Event

Description:
On 25 February 1933 Constable Joyce was patrolling in the neighbourhood of the Junction Hotel in High Street. He noticed a crowd and, on intervening, discovered a fight in progress. One man had been knocked down and Constable Joyce stopped the fight and put the injured man in the care of his friends.
Two other men, Ingram Waters and John Wilkinson attempted to leave the scene and Joyce gave chase. In the course of attempting to arrest the suspects Joyce was punched and kicked. Both men were arrested and subsequently charged with offensive behaviour, resisting arrest and assaulting Constable Joyce.
At trial Wilkinson was fined £4 for offensive behaviour and resisting arrest and one month jail for assaulting Joyce.
